flintlock muzzleloader/squirrel hunting
anybody else hunt squirrels with a flintlock?
Not yet but must say I think on it often. I hunt squirrels with a 22&ironsights and find the subject of flintlocks&squirrels very interesting!
No, but I have always wanted to. I think that would be a great challenge and accomplishment. I'm impressed, I saw the headshots in the gallery. Great job.
Not for several years since I'm not near any squirrel woods. While stationed at Ft Riley I would squirrel hunt in 18th Century dress with my .45 flintlock. Moccasins make it a bit easier to slip in quietly. I used the same rifle for deer.

I started hunting them just last year with a .36 flintlock. And I've been hunting over 40 years! A 62 grain round ball, patched, in front of 40 grains of FFF. What a hoot. The rifle is quite accurate - RESTED! You have to "muster up" all your woods skills and get them in the 20 to 30 yard range. Bring losts of "balls" and cleaning stuff - and don't be afraid to eat a big slice of "humble pie" while the luckiest, fat gray in the woods laughs when you miss! Pikie
no not with a flintlock was thinking i would to try with either 32 or 36 cal with a cap which one would you use and what brand rifle
either would work fine, even a .40 caliber. personaly,i prefer the .32. there is only one company i know of that still produces a small caliber flintlock and that is Pedersoli(made in Italy). they are decent guns and if all you want is something for the accasional squirrel hunt and plinking they will do just fine, but if one wants to seriously get into flintlock hunting i would recommend a custom made rifle.
thanks i have looked at them on dixie gun works sight as i have never fired a flintlock was leaning toward a cap and ball around here i know of no one who uses a flintlock to show me all the ins and outs of it which ever one i choose will not see that much use as i only get out on the weekends do to work
I have a .62 cal smoothbore (20 ga) and a .67 cal smoothbore (16 ga) that I've taken squirrels with. Flinters are just as accurate as modern firearms, you just have to pay a little more attention to details such as a sharp flint or keeping your powder dry.
Smoke Pole Is the way to go, And I'm with you on the 62 Cal. Smoothbore, I've been looking for a good deal on a Fowler !
I hunt with a .32 caliber Pedersoli Flintlock. I've taken a few squirrels with it. I was tempted to go for a hog right after I got the rifle. If I had known then what I know now about the .32 caliber, I would have been making sausage. :) I was in some pretty thick palmetto and the hogs were very close to me. One hog even stood still, in a good opening, long enough for me to take a bead on his ear hole. I would be taking the shoot if it ever comes up again.
Dave, Don't be tricken these guys into a flintlock.
Once they find out how much fun it is there will be no turning back.
They will be ruined for life.

Have not used a flintlock but have taken a "boatload" with my T/C Cherokee 32 cal and a T/C Seneca 36 cal both are very accurate with roundball. Both beat a 22 for fun. I prefer to conoe the local creeks and snipe them from it.
i use a crosman storm xt. but i am very interested in muzzle-loading for squirrels. i (for price sake) was thinking on buying a traditions kentucky rifle or mabey a hawkins. any review on either of these guns would be much appreiciated.
ifigured out traditions makes a .32 "crockett" gun. its on the top of my wish list. just to let you guys know theres a website that sell really cheap lead called 'graf and sons'.
